Problem

During the COVID pandemic hiking saw a surge in popularity, people enjoying the freedom and fresh air. Since then safety concerns for inexperienced hikers and a lack of social connectivity persist. Many hikers, especially beginners, may lack the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate trails safely and efficiently. Additionally, traditional hiking apps often prioritise navigation and trail information, neglecting the social and health aspects of the outdoor experience.

Trekr looks to create a community that encourages learning and safety for hikers.

‘Nature parks saw a 90% increase in visitors while under financial and staffing constraints because of the pandemic.’

User research

Through user research and personas I was able to identify pain points that would help outline the potential app features and the users priorities while using the app.

Branding

Developing a brand identity that would stand out and suit a broad range of users was important. Typography and colours were chosen to create an accessible app experience through hierarchy, layout and boldness.

The logo is simple, making use of a double entendre to represent a tree and a path offering lots of routes.

Wireframes

Completing wireframing, from schematic to detailed sketching, aids a consistent user interface to be achieved quickly.

Login Screens

As the potential first touch point for the user to see the app/brand it was important to give a concise but engaging introduction of what the app is for.

App Screens

The final app screen designs had a consistent hierarchy and layout that allowed for all the app features to be presented in an accessible and inclusive way for all users to understand.

Project Outcome

This project provided valuable insights into the design and development of mobile applications for the outdoor recreation market. By prioritising user needs and leveraging technology to enhance the hiking experience, I was able to create an impactful app that could empower the hiking community to explore the outdoors safely and confidently.

If I were to approach this project again, I would look further into how current hiking technology, like fitness tracking watches, could be better integrated into the experience. For example, an apple watch app.
